IELTS is the first real step toward your study-abroad journey — and it's the step most students underprepare for. Rise Up Overseas runs small, closely-monitored batches with experienced faculty, original study material, and weekly mock tests with one-on-one feedback, so your score reflects your actual ability on test day, not a guess.
What is IELTS, and why does it matter?
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the world's most widely taken English-proficiency test for study, work, and immigration. It's jointly owned and managed by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, the British Council, and IDP: IELTS Australia — which is why it carries weight with universities, employers, professional bodies, and immigration authorities across Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and the USA.
The test measures all four language skills — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — and reports your ability on a 9-band scale rather than a pass/fail result. Most universities and visa categories specify a minimum overall band plus minimum scores in each individual skill, so a strong overall score with one weak section can still fall short of what's required.
For most of our students, IELTS isn't the end goal — it's the gateway to admission and a student visa in their chosen country. That's why we teach IELTS alongside genuine study-abroad counselling, not as a standalone test-prep course.

We keep our IELTS batches small and personal on purpose — a 9-band score comes from targeted correction, not from sitting in a crowded classroom. Every batch runs alongside our study-abroad counselling, so your test prep and your university/visa plan move together, not as two separate tracks.
Small batch sizes
Every trainer can actually track every student's progress — no getting lost in a 40-person lecture hall.
Free original study material
Practice tests, audio samples, and reading passages across every level — no extra charge, no recycled photocopies.
Weekly mock tests
A full, timed mock test every week with section-wise evaluation, so you always know your current band — not a guess.
Special grammar batch
A dedicated grammar track for students who need to fix foundational issues before tackling Writing and Speaking.
Experienced, qualified faculty
Trainers who teach IELTS full-time and know exactly how each section is actually scored.
1-on-1 speaking practice
Individual speaking sessions focused on fluency, pronunciation, and coherence — the areas generic group practice misses.
IELTS Academic vs. IELTS General Training
The two modules share the same Listening and Speaking tests but differ in Reading and Writing. Picking the right one matters — universities only accept Academic scores for admission.
Not sure which module you need?
Our counsellors check your end goal — admission, migration, or work — before placing you in the right track.
- ✓Free diagnostic test before you pick a module
- ✓One-on-one counselling, not a generic brochure chat
- ✓Switch between Academic and General anytime before your batch starts
IELTS Academic
Assesses whether your English is ready for undergraduate or postgraduate study. Reading uses three long academic-style texts; Writing Task 1 asks you to describe a graph, chart, table, or diagram. This is the version universities require for admission.
IELTS General Training
Focuses on everyday social and workplace English. Reading draws on everyday material like notices and advertisements; Writing Task 1 is a letter, not a graph description. Used for immigration to Australia, Canada and New Zealand, and for secondary education or work experience.
The IELTS exam format, section by section
All candidates sit all four sections, usually on the same day for Listening, Reading and Writing, with Speaking scheduled separately — either the same day or up to a week before or after.
| Section | Duration | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | ~30 min + 10 min transfer time | 40 questions across 4 recorded parts, each played once |
| Reading | 60 min | 40 questions across 3 passages (academic texts, or everyday material for General Training) |
| Writing | 60 min | 2 tasks — a graph/chart description or letter, then an essay of 250+ words |
| Speaking | 11–14 min | A face-to-face interview with a certified examiner, in 3 parts |
How IELTS band scores actually work
Your overall band is the average of your four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band — and most universities and visa categories set a minimum for each section too, not just the overall number.
Listening & Reading
- ●Scored out of 40 raw marks, then converted onto the 9-band scale
- ●Reading's conversion table differs slightly between Academic and General Training
- ●Every correct answer counts equally — there's no negative marking
Writing & Speaking
- ●Assessed directly by certified examiners against published scoring criteria
- ●Writing Task 2 counts for roughly twice as much as Task 1 toward the Writing score
- ●Speaking is scored on fluency, vocabulary, grammar range, and pronunciation
Why most students plateau: general English fluency gets you to band 6-6.5. Moving past that takes targeted work on task-specific technique — exactly what our weekly mock tests and 1-on-1 feedback are built around.
Batch types & timings

Small batches, real attention
Every trainer tracks every student — rolling, weekday, and weekend slots, all capped so you're never lost in a crowd.
- ✓Capped batch size — real feedback, not a lecture hall
- ✓Trainers who've scored band 8+ themselves
- ✓Missed a class? Free make-up sessions in the next batch
Rolling Batches
Enrol any day of the week. Ideal if you want to start immediately rather than wait for a fixed batch date.
Weekday Batches
Structured morning and evening slots, Monday to Friday, with grammar woven into the core course.
Weekend & Doubt-Solving
Saturday grammar, vocabulary, and doubt-solving sessions — built for working professionals and students with weekday commitments.

01IELTS Academic — Who It's For & How It's Structured▾
The version almost every university-bound student needs.
Who should take it
Anyone applying for undergraduate or postgraduate study at an English-medium university. Admission teams only accept Academic scores — General Training won't be considered for a degree application.
What's different
Reading uses three longer, more analytical academic texts. Writing Task 1 asks you to describe a graph, table, chart, or diagram in a formal register.
02IELTS General Training — Migration & Work▾
The right choice for immigration, secondary education, and work experience.
Reading passages come from everyday material — notices, advertisements, handbooks — rather than academic texts. Writing Task 1 is a letter responding to a situation, which can be personal, formal, or semi-formal in tone. Used for immigration to Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.
03Listening — Structure & How to Prepare▾
40 questions, one listen, no replays — accuracy under time pressure is the whole game.
Four recorded sections of rising difficulty: a casual social conversation, a monologue in an everyday setting, a conversation among up to four people in an educational context, and an academic monologue such as a lecture. Each recording plays only once, so active note-taking matters more than memorising vocabulary lists.
04Reading — Question Types & Time Management▾
60 minutes, 40 questions, three passages — most students run out of time, not vocabulary.
Question types test gist, main ideas, specific detail, skimming, logical argument, and the writer's opinion or purpose. With no extra time to transfer answers, practising under strict timing matters as much as reading comprehension itself.
05Writing — Task 1 & Task 2, What Examiners Look For▾
Two tasks, 60 minutes — and Task 2 is worth roughly double Task 1.
Task 1
Academic: describe a graph, table, chart, or diagram in at least 150 words. General Training: write a letter of at least 150 words responding to a given situation.
Task 2
An essay of at least 250 words responding to a point of view, argument, or problem — formal in Academic, and allowed to be more personal in General Training.
06Speaking — All 3 Parts, Face-to-Face with an Examiner▾
11–14 minutes, recorded, and designed so rehearsed answers don't hold up.
Part 1 (4–5 min)
General questions about yourself — home, work, studies, and interests.
Part 2 (3–4 min)
A topic card, one minute to prepare, then up to two minutes of speaking, followed by one or two follow-up questions from the examiner.
Part 3 (4–5 min)
A deeper discussion of Part 2's topic, covering more abstract ideas.
07Band Scoring — How the 0-9 Scale Actually Works▾
Your overall band is an average of four section scores, not a single combined test.
Listening and Reading raw scores (out of 40) are converted onto the 9-band scale; Writing and Speaking are scored directly by certified examiners against published criteria. All four scores are then averaged and rounded to the nearest whole or half band for your overall result.
08Booking Your Test & Getting Your Results▾
What actually happens between booking and holding your results.
Book directly through your nearest centre via ielts.org, choosing a test date that fits your application timeline. Results are typically available around 13 days after your test date. You receive one official Test Report Form — if you need extra copies sent to specific institutions, your test centre can send those directly on request.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about our IELTS batches, the test itself, and how it fits into your study-abroad plan.
How long does IELTS preparation usually take?▾
It depends on your starting level — students who already have strong general English can be exam-ready in a few weeks of focused practice, while others benefit from a longer, more structured course. Our counsellors assess your starting level in the free demo class and recommend a realistic timeline.
Should I take Academic or General Training?▾
If you're applying for a university degree, take Academic — it's the only version admission teams accept. General Training is for immigration to Australia, Canada, or New Zealand, or for secondary education and work experience, rather than degree admission.
Will I get individual speaking practice, or only group sessions?▾
Both. Group classes cover technique and strategy for every section, and we additionally run 1-on-1 speaking sessions focused on your individual fluency, pronunciation, and coherence.
How often are mock tests held?▾
Every week, as a full timed mock covering all four sections, with section-wise evaluation so you can track your progress batch to batch rather than guessing where you stand.
Can I switch batches if my schedule changes?▾
Yes — speak to your counsellor and we'll move you to a batch timing that fits, without starting your course over.
Do you only teach IELTS, or do you also help with my university and visa application?▾
We handle both. Rise Up Overseas is a full study-abroad consultancy, so your IELTS prep, university shortlisting, and visa documentation are managed by the same team — not handed off to a separate agent once your test is done.
