Study In UK
UK Student Visa Consultant · Surat, Ahmedabad & Vadodara
Everything an Indian student needs to decide, apply, and move to the UK — tuition, the exact UKVI-mandated living-cost figure, the Graduate Route post-study work visa (which is being cut in 2027 — most guides haven't caught up), Russell Group universities, and India-specific scholarships. Every figure here is checked against gov.uk, UCAS, UKCISA and HESA — not repeated from a blog.
Study in UK
India is now the single largest source country of new international students entering UK higher education. In 2024/25, roughly 95,000 new entrants came from India, edging ahead of China's ~93,600 — a reversal of a decade-plus Chinese lead, and a figure more than seven times India's 2017/18 numbers, per the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA). Overall, 685,565 international students were enrolled at UK institutions in 2024/25, around 24% of the entire UK higher-education population.
The last of the four numbers above is the one every other UK guide is behind on: the Graduate Route post-study work visa is being cut from 2 years to 18 months for Bachelor's and Master's graduates, effective for applications from 1 January 2027 — confirmed directly on gov.uk. Anyone planning around the "2 years" figure without that date needs to read this page before applying.

The UK's structural pitch is speed and prestige together: a 3-year Bachelor's (England/Wales/Northern Ireland) and a 1-year taught Master's are both meaningfully shorter than equivalent US degrees, without trading down on global reputation.
Why the UK, specifically for Indian students
Russell Group & rankings
24 Russell Group universities, the UK's research-intensive group, alongside a strong global rankings presence — at least 10 UK universities sit in the QS World Rankings 2026 global top 100.
Shorter degrees
Shorter degrees than the US model — a taught Master's in one year rather than two, which changes the total cost-and-time equation meaningfully.
Graduate Route
The Graduate Route post-study work visa — still a genuine 2 years for Bachelor's/Master's graduates who apply before 31 December 2026, and 3 years for PhD graduates regardless of when they apply.
India-specific scholarships
India-specific, fully-costed scholarships — Chevening, Commonwealth, GREAT, and Charles Wallace India Trust among them — see scholarships in the UK.
NHS access included
Because the Immigration Health Surcharge is paid upfront with the visa, most students get NHS access without buying separate private health insurance — see the health section below.
Largest Indian cohort
India is now the single largest source country of new international students in UK higher education — roughly 95,000 new entrants in 2024/25, per HESA.
Bachelor's, Master's & PhD in the UK
See the individual Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD guides for admission specifics at each level.
Bachelor's
Bachelor's degrees run 3 years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, applied for centrally through UCAS.
Master's
Master's programs are typically 1 year, taught, and applied for directly with the university rather than through UCAS.
PhD
PhD study runs 3–4 years, and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) raised its minimum doctoral stipend to £20,780/year from 1 October 2025 — the largest real-terms increase since 2003, and a genuinely competitive, citable figure.
Cost of studying in the UK
The cost of living is one of the UK's most precisely documented figures, because it's set directly by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) as part of the student visa's financial-requirement rules — not an estimate.
| Location | Monthly figure |
|---|---|
| London | £1,529/month, up to 9 months |
| Outside London | £1,171/month, up to 9 months |
Tuition fees: Unlike UK home-student fees, which are regulated and capped, international tuition is set independently by each university and varies substantially by subject — classroom-based courses generally cost less than laboratory or clinical (Medicine) courses.
One structural protection worth knowing: several universities, UCL among them, guarantee most international students' tuition won't rise mid-course (a "cohort guarantee") — though Medicine (MBBS) is a common, explicitly stated exception, subject to annual increases. Confirm this policy with each specific university, since it isn't a UK-wide rule. See the full cost guide.
Scholarships for Indian students
The UK has an unusually deep, well-documented set of India-specific scholarship routes — more so than most other guides reflect. See the full scholarships guide for how to sequence applications across all four routes.
Chevening Scholarships
Fully funded, UK-government (FCDO) postgraduate scholarships. Requires 2+ years (2,800 hours) of relevant work experience, an undergraduate degree completed at least 2 years before the deadline, and applications to 3 different eligible courses with at least one unconditional offer by deadline. The 2027/28 cycle closes 6 October 2026.
Commonwealth Scholarships
Covers full tuition, return airfare, a study travel grant, and a monthly stipend of £1,712 outside London / £2,000 in London, via the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission UK. Requires a minimum upper-second-class (2:1) honours degree and demonstrated financial need.
GREAT Scholarships (India)
Run by British Council India: £10,000 per scholarship toward tuition for 1-year taught postgraduate courses, at 13 named UK partner universities for 2026/27.
Charles Wallace India Trust
For arts/heritage-conservation fields, with an average total grant value exceeding £50,000 — see the full scholarships guide for eligibility.

- ●ATAS: certain sensitive STEM postgraduate and research subjects require an ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) certificate before a visa can be issued — check this early, since it adds real time to your application
Note: The same checklist, with exactly where each document fits the application timeline, is covered again in the visa guide — and the separate university-application document list (transcripts, SOP, LORs) plus how to actually approach the SOP is covered in the full document checklist & SOP guide.
Intakes & application deadlines
Postgraduate admissions are rolling and direct-to-university, not through UCAS — there's no fixed national deadline, but popular programs and scholarship-linked places fill up well before the course start.
Main intake
Across virtually every university and program.
Early UCAS deadline
18:00 UK time for Oxford, Cambridge, and most Medicine/Dentistry/Veterinary Medicine courses.
Main UCAS deadline
Mid-January (13–15th, confirm the exact date on the live UCAS page each cycle) for equal consideration on most other undergraduate courses.
Admission & English requirements
UK undergraduate admissions commonly reference the UCAS Tariff, a points system that converts different qualifications into a comparable score against A-levels — though not every university or course uses it, and some cap which qualifications count toward it.
English — two different tests, two different purposes
| Threshold | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Visa minimum — degree level | IELTS for UKVI 5.5 overall, min. 5.5 in each component |
| Visa minimum — below degree level | IELTS for UKVI 4.0 overall |
| University admission (typical) | Often 6.5–7.0, set by each university |
The Graduate Route — and the 2027 change
The Graduate Route is the UK's post-study work visa. As of the most recent, dated confirmation directly from gov.uk and UKCISA: it currently gives 2 years to Bachelor's and Master's graduates — but only for applications submitted on or before 31 December 2026. From 1 January 2027, that duration is confirmed to fall to 18 months for the same graduates, following the UK government's 2025 Immigration White Paper. PhD graduates keep the full 3 years, unaffected by this change, regardless of when they apply.
This is the single most consequential timing fact on this entire page — anyone still quoting a flat "2 years" for every UK graduate, without the January 2027 cutoff, is quoting an outdated or incomplete figure. Full Graduate Route guide — exact dates, fees, and what changes on 1 January 2027 →
Work rights during study: Per UKCISA's official guidance, Student visa holders on a degree-level course or above can work up to 20 hours/week during term time, with full-time work permitted during official vacations, before course start, on work placements, and after course completion. Students on below-degree-level courses are limited to 10 hours/week during term time. A "week" is defined as any consecutive 7-day period starting on a Monday, and students are responsible for tracking their own hours if working multiple jobs.
| Graduate level | Apply by 31 Dec 2026 | Apply from 1 Jan 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's / Master's | 2 years | 18 months |
| PhD / Doctorate | 3 years | 3 years — unchanged |
Popular courses & fields of study
Business, finance, engineering, computer science/AI/data science, and law draw the largest share of Indian applicants, with London's status as a global finance hub pulling business and fintech students specifically. A clarification on the Graduate Route and STEM: Unlike an older, pre-2021 scheme, the current Graduate Route does not give STEM graduates any extra duration over other subjects — every Bachelor's/Master's graduate gets the same window regardless of field, and every PhD graduate gets the same 3 years regardless of field. Some other content still implies a STEM bonus exists; it doesn't, under the current rules.
Medicine — a genuine exception worth stating plainly: Medicine and Dentistry are meaningfully harder to enter as an international student than other fields: the UK government centrally caps total medical and dental student numbers via the Office for Students, and international entrant quotas at each medical school sit well below domestic quotas. The commonly-cited '~7.5% international quota' figure wasn't confirmed against an official source — confirm the exact figure with your target medical school directly.
ATAS: Certain sensitive STEM postgraduate and research subjects also require an ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) certificate before a visa can be issued — check this early, since it adds real time to your application. See the visa guide for where ATAS fits into your document checklist.

Accommodation
The UK's accommodation system is considerably more structured than Ireland's — most universities run a formal halls-of-residence system, and many explicitly guarantee first-year accommodation to new students, including international students, provided you meet application conditions and deadlines. A live, documented UK student housing affordability conversation does exist in the press, alongside the university halls system — see the full accommodation guide.
UK vs other study destinations
If you're weighing the UK against other destinations, the honest comparison is about trade-offs, not a single "best" answer.
| Factor | UK | France | Ireland |
|---|---|---|---|
| Degree length | 3-yr Bachelor's, 1-yr Master's | 3-yr Licence, 2-yr Master's | 3–4-yr Bachelor's, 1–2-yr Master's |
| Teaching language | English throughout | 1,500+ English programs, French elsewhere | English throughout |
| Post-study work (from your degree) | 2 yrs (18 mo from Jan 2027) / 3 yrs PhD | 1 year (APS), confirmed | 1–2 yrs, by NFQ level |
| Visa financial proof | £1,529/mo (London), official UKVI figure | €615/month | €10,000/yr benchmark |
| Strongest global rankings presence | 10+ in QS top 100 | Strong Grandes Écoles cluster | Fewer top-100 entries, strong in tech/pharma niches |
Health, careers & research
NHS access, graduate outcomes, research funding and the formal UK–India education relationship.
Health insurance
The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), paid as part of your visa application (£776/year for students), gives access to NHS care largely free of charge from the date your visa starts — on broadly the same basis as a UK resident. Most students do not need to buy separate private health insurance for standard NHS-equivalent care because of this. What the IHS does not cover: prescriptions in England (Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland offer free prescriptions to everyone regardless), dental treatment, eye tests, and assisted conception (fertility) services — these need separate payment or private cover either way.
Career prospects
The official source for graduate outcomes is HESA's Graduate Outcomes survey, which measures graduate activity roughly 15 months after course completion. The most recent release found 87% of 2023/24 graduates in work or further study, down slightly from 88% the year before. See career prospects in the UK.
Research & academic reputation
UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is the umbrella public body funding UK research, including the PhD stipends covered above. Research quality across UK institutions is formally assessed through the Research Excellence Framework (REF), which determines the allocation of roughly £2 billion/year in public research funding — genuine, citable evidence of sustained state investment in research quality, not just marketing language. See the full research & academic reputation guide.
Alumni & the UK–India relationship
Beyond the scale of current Indian enrolment, the UK–India education relationship is formally institutionalised: UKIERI (UK-India Education and Research Initiative), now in its third phase, has delivered 822 partnerships, 2,423 research/knowledge products, and trained over 25,000 learners, researchers and academics. The India-UK Roadmap 2030 / Vision 2035 separately commits to a Mutual Recognition of Qualifications framework and a biennial UK-India Science and Innovation Council, alongside programs like the Newton Fund for early-career researcher mobility and a Women in STEM Scholarships scheme for Indian women. Visa, cost & post-study work
01UK Student Visa — Complete Guide▾
Every fact here traces to gov.uk directly — including the one requirement (TB testing) several other guides leave out entirely.
What you need before you apply
You need a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) reference number from a UK licensed student sponsor before you can submit a Student visa application — this comes from your university once you've accepted your offer, not from UKVI directly.
What it actually costs
| Cost item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Visa application fee | £558 |
| Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) | £776/year for students, paid upfront for your full course length |
Financial proof
| Location | Monthly living-cost figure (current) |
|---|---|
| London | £1,529, up to 9 months |
| Outside London | £1,171, up to 9 months |
Funds must be held continuously for 28 days, ending within 31 days of your application date — confirmed on gov.uk. See the full cost breakdown to plan this alongside tuition.
The TB test — India is on the required list
India is explicitly listed by gov.uk as a country where a TB test certificate is required to enter the UK on a Student visa, taken at a gov.uk-approved clinic in India. This is a requirement several other guides skip over entirely — build the extra appointment and processing time into your application timeline.
ATAS — for certain STEM/research subjects
Some postgraduate and research courses in sensitive STEM subjects require an ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) certificate before your visa can be granted. Check this with your university the moment you're considering a research-heavy STEM Master's or PhD — it adds real processing time if required.
Document checklist
- Valid passport
- CAS reference number
- Financial evidence
- TB test certificate
- ATAS certificate (if required)
- Written financial sponsor consent (if applicable)
- Parental consent (if under 18)
02Cost of Studying in the UK▾
The UK doesn't have one single government-set tuition figure the way France does — but it does have one official living-cost figure, and it's the one worth memorising.
The one official number: UKVI living-cost proof
| Location | Monthly figure (current, from 11 Nov 2025) |
|---|---|
| London | £1,529 |
| Outside London | £1,171 |
This is a visa-compliance figure, not a lifestyle estimate — held continuously for 28 days, ending within 31 days of your application date. It's the single most reliably official cost figure in this entire guide, confirmed directly on gov.uk.
Tuition — why there's no single number
One structural point worth knowing: some universities, UCL among them, guarantee most international students' fees won't rise mid-course — though Medicine (MBBS) is a commonly stated exception. Confirm this per-university.
03The Graduate Route — Post-Study Work in the UK▾
This is the UK's single most commonly-about-to-be-wrong fact — the kind of thing that changed for France (APS) and Ireland (Stamp 1G) too, except here the change is dated and hasn't happened yet.
What the Graduate Route gives you
The Graduate Route lets eligible graduates stay in the UK to work or look for work after finishing their course, without needing a job offer first.
The exact, dated change
| Graduate level | Applications up to 31 Dec 2026 | Applications from 1 Jan 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's / Master's | 2 years | 18 months |
| PhD / Doctorate | 3 years | 3 years — unchanged |
This follows the UK government's 2025 Immigration White Paper ("Restoring Control over the Immigration System") and is confirmed directly on gov.uk and by UKCISA — not a proposal still under discussion. If your target intake means you'll graduate and apply for the Graduate Route after 1 January 2027, plan around 18 months, not 2 years.
Fees on the Graduate Route
| Cost item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Visa fee | £937 |
| Immigration Health Surcharge | ≈£1,035/year — the general rate, higher than the £776/year student rate, since Graduate Route holders are no longer classed as students |
No STEM bonus under the current scheme
Unlike an older, pre-2021 Tier 4 scheme, the current Graduate Route gives identical durations to every subject — there's no extra time for STEM graduates specifically, at either Bachelor's/Master's or PhD level.
04English Language Requirements for the UK▾
Two separate thresholds exist, from two separate authorities, and conflating them is one of the most common mistakes in UK application planning.
Two different requirements, not one
The UK has two genuinely separate English-language thresholds that get conflated constantly: the visa-level minimum, set by UKVI, and your university's own admission requirement, set independently and almost always higher.
IELTS for UKVI — the visa minimum
| Study level | Visa minimum (IELTS for UKVI, CEFR) |
|---|---|
| Below degree level | 4.0 overall, min. 4.0 each component (CEFR B1) |
| Degree level and above | 5.5 overall, min. 5.5 each component (CEFR B2) |
IELTS for UKVI is a distinct, higher-security test from standard IELTS Academic — it must be taken at an officially approved IELTS for UKVI test centre, specifically because it's used for immigration purposes, not just academic admission.
Your university's actual requirement — usually higher
Alternatives to IELTS
Some universities accept PTE Academic, TOEFL, or a Medium of Instruction Certificate in place of IELTS for admission purposes — though the visa itself specifically requires an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) for most applicants, of which IELTS for UKVI is the most widely used. Confirm which SELTs your specific visa route accepts before booking a test.
05UK Document Checklist & SOP Guide▾
Two different checklists live inside most guides' "documents" section without being clearly separated: what your university application needs, and what your visa needs. Here they're kept apart.
For the university application
- Academic transcripts and certificates
- English test scores (IELTS/PTE/TOEFL — see English requirements)
- Statement of Purpose (SOP)
- Letters of Recommendation (LORs)
- CV/resume, for most postgraduate and all MBA applications
- GMAT/GRE scores, where the program requires them (common for MBA, some Master's)
For the Student visa specifically
- Valid passport
- CAS reference number
- Financial evidence matching the current UKVI figures
- TB test certificate — required for Indian applicants
- ATAS certificate, if your course/nationality combination requires it
The full detail on each of these is in the visa guide — this guide focuses on the university-application side, which most visa-focused guides skip over.
Writing the SOP for a UK application
A strong UK Statement of Purpose typically does a few things well: it connects your specific academic and professional background directly to the specific program (not a generic "why I want to study abroad" narrative), names concrete reasons for that specific university and course rather than reasons that could apply to any UK university, and — particularly relevant for visa credibility — reflects a genuine intention consistent with your visa application's own stated purpose.

Russell Group vs non-Russell-Group
Russell Group membership signals research intensity, not automatically the single best fit for every course — several non-Russell-Group universities lead specific fields. Match the department and course to your goals first, prestige second.
07Best Student Cities in the UK▾
London dominates the conversation and the cost — here's how the rest actually compare.
The one officially confirmed cost split
| Location | UKVI monthly living-cost figure |
|---|---|
| London | £1,529 |
| Outside London | £1,171 |
This is the only nationally official, single-source cost comparison across UK cities — everything else below is indicative.
The cities themselves
How to actually choose
Beyond London's outsized finance and business-employer density, city choice in the UK should follow your specific course's strongest regional industry cluster and your budget relative to the London/outside-London visa cost split above — see business & finance in the UK for how that plays out for finance-track students specifically.
08Studying in London▾
Most guides treat London as a line item in a comparison table. Given how much it actually shapes an Indian student's UK experience — cost, career access, community — it deserves its own guide, not a row.
Why London specifically
London hosts a disproportionate share of the UK's Russell Group presence (UCL, Imperial, LSE, King's College London, Queen Mary) and, structurally, the country's deepest finance, consulting, tech, and professional-services employer base — see business & finance in the UK for how that plays out specifically for finance-track students.
The cost reality
London carries the UK's only officially higher visa-compliance cost tier: £1,529/month in UKVI-mandated living-cost proof, versus £1,171/month everywhere else in the UK — a real, government-confirmed cost gap, not just a general impression that London is expensive.
The Indian student community in London specifically
The honest trade-off
London's employer density and network access are genuinely hard to replicate anywhere else in the UK — but that has to be weighed against the meaningfully higher cost of living. See the city comparison guide for how London stacks up against Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Leeds specifically.
09The UK Education System, Explained▾
The UK's grading and credit system is structurally different enough from India's that it's worth a dedicated explainer, not a footnote.
Degree classifications
UK undergraduate degrees are typically awarded with a classification — First Class, Upper Second (2:1), Lower Second (2:2), or Third Class — rather than a percentage or GPA. This classification system is what UK employers and postgraduate admissions actually reference, and it maps only approximately onto Indian percentage-based results, which is exactly why many scholarships (Commonwealth Scholarships among them, requiring a minimum 2:1-equivalent) specify it explicitly rather than a percentage.
The credit system
Why this matters practically
When you're converting an Indian percentage into what a UK university or scholarship expects, don't assume a simple linear conversion — universities publish their own equivalency guidance for Indian qualifications specifically, and that's the number to use, not a generic online converter. See Bachelor's in the UK and Master's in the UK for where this fits your specific application.
Degree levels
10Bachelor's in the UK▾
Three years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland — a full year shorter than the US model, applied for through one centralised system.
Length & structure
Bachelor's degrees run 3 years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
How you apply
Almost all UK undergraduate applications go through UCAS, the centralised application system, with equal-consideration deadlines of 15 October (Oxford, Cambridge, Medicine/Dentistry/Vet Medicine) and mid-January (most other courses) — see intakes & deadlines.
Admission requirements
What comes after
Bachelor's graduates are eligible for the Graduate Route — 2 years if you apply before 31 December 2026, 18 months from 1 January 2027.
11Master's in the UK▾
One year, direct-apply, and the level most Indian students choose — largely because it compresses cost and time without giving up Graduate Route eligibility.
Length & how you apply
Most taught Master's programs run 1 year, applied for directly with the university rather than through UCAS — admissions are typically rolling, so earlier applications have a real practical advantage over later ones for popular programs.
English requirements
IELTS for UKVI sets a visa-level minimum of 5.5 overall for degree-level study — but individual universities commonly require higher scores, often 6.5–7.0, for admission itself. Confirm your specific program's admission requirement separately from the visa minimum.
Funding a Master's
The GREAT Scholarships (£10,000, India-specific) and Chevening (fully funded) both apply specifically at this level — see the full scholarships guide for eligibility.
After graduation
Master's graduates get the same Graduate Route window as Bachelor's graduates — 2 years before 31 December 2026, 18 months from 1 January 2027.
12PhD in the UK▾
UKRI's minimum doctoral stipend just had its largest real-terms increase since 2003 — most guides haven't updated their numbers yet.
Funding — the current stipend
UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) raised its minimum doctoral stipend to £20,780/year from 1 October 2025 — an 8% increase, the largest real-terms rise since 2003. Most funded PhD positions are attached to a UKRI or Research Council studentship rather than paid for out of pocket through tuition.
Length & structure
PhDs typically run 3–4 years, applied for through direct contact with a prospective supervisor — standard UK academic practice, and worth starting well before a formal application.
Research reputation behind it
See the full research & academic reputation guide for how UKRI and the REF (Research Excellence Framework) back this up with roughly £2 billion/year in quality-related research funding.
After a PhD
PhD graduates get the fullest Graduate Route window — 3 years, unaffected by the January 2027 cut that applies to Bachelor's and Master's graduates.
Subjects
13MBA in the UK▾
One of the most searched degree-specific topics for the UK — because it's genuinely the UK's strongest postgraduate brand outside the Russell Group's academic core.
Why an MBA in the UK specifically
A UK MBA typically runs 1 year, full-time — shorter than the standard 2-year US MBA, which materially changes the total cost and opportunity-cost equation for someone leaving a job in India to study it.
Where the strongest programs are
What applications typically need
- A completed undergraduate degree
- Several years of full-time work experience — commonly expected, though the exact minimum varies by school
- GMAT or GRE, required by most top programs (executive/part-time MBAs sometimes waive this)
- IELTS for UKVI plus, commonly, a higher university-set English requirement — see English requirements in the UK
Cost, funding and what comes after
MBA tuition sits well above standard taught-Master's tuition at most schools — see the cost of studying guide for the general fee landscape, then confirm the specific program's fee directly, since MBA pricing is set independently by each business school. On graduation, MBA holders qualify for the same Graduate Route window as any other Master's-level graduate — 2 years if you apply before 31 December 2026, 18 months from 1 January 2027.
14Computer Science, AI & Data Science in the UK▾
One of the fastest-growing application categories among Indian students applying to the UK, and one where a specific visa document — ATAS — genuinely changes your application timeline.
Why this field draws so many Indian applicants
UK Computer Science, AI, and Data Science Master's programs combine research depth (several Russell Group universities run dedicated AI/ML research groups) with a 1-year taught format — the same time-and-cost compression that makes UK Master's degrees broadly attractive, applied to one of the highest-demand employment fields.
The ATAS requirement — read this before applying
Certain AI, machine learning, and other sensitive-technology postgraduate/research courses require an ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) certificate before a Student visa can be issued. This is one of the most commonly missed steps in tech-program applications specifically — confirm with your target university's admissions office the moment you shortlist a program, since ATAS processing adds real time on top of the normal visa timeline. See the visa guide for where this fits your document checklist.
No extra Graduate Route time for STEM
Unlike an older, pre-2021 scheme, today's Graduate Route gives identical post-study work durations to CS/AI/Data Science graduates as to every other subject — there is no current STEM-specific extension, despite this being a persistent point of confusion.
Career pathways
See career prospects in the UK and business & finance in the UK for how tech and fintech employment cluster, particularly around London.
15Engineering in the UK▾
A broad, consistently strong field across nearly every UK university, not concentrated in one or two specialist schools the way some countries' engineering strength is.
The landscape
Engineering strength runs broadly across the Russell Group and beyond — Imperial College London, UCL, Manchester, and Bristol are commonly cited among the strongest for engineering specifically, alongside strong applied programs at non-Russell-Group universities. See the top universities guide for the full Russell Group list and current QS rankings.
Professional accreditation
After graduation
Engineering graduates get the standard Graduate Route window — there is no engineering- or STEM-specific extension under the current scheme, despite what some older content implies.
16Law (LLB/LLM) in the UK▾
A globally respected qualification — with a career pathway that genuinely needs planning ahead of time, not assumed.
LLB vs LLM
An LLB is the UK's undergraduate law degree (3 years, England/Wales/NI); an LLM is a 1-year taught postgraduate law degree, commonly chosen by Indian students who already hold a law degree from India and want a UK specialisation or international-law credential rather than requalifying from scratch.
The career reality worth planning around
Practising law in the UK as a solicitor or barrister requires qualification routes (such as the SQE — Solicitors Qualifying Exam) that are separate from simply holding an LLB/LLM — an international law degree does not automatically confer UK practising rights. This is worth researching specifically and early if your goal is to practise law in the UK itself, rather than assuming the degree alone is sufficient.
Post-study work
LLB and LLM graduates get the standard Graduate Route window based on their degree level — 2 years (18 months from 1 January 2027) either way, since both are Bachelor's/Master's-level, not PhD.
17Medicine, Nursing & Healthcare in the UK▾
Three genuinely different levels of accessibility live under one "healthcare" umbrella — this guide keeps them separate rather than blurring them.
Medicine (MBBS) — the hard truth
Medicine and Dentistry are meaningfully harder to enter as an international student than almost any other UK field. The UK government centrally caps total medical and dental student numbers through the Office for Students, and international-entrant quotas at each medical school sit well below domestic quotas.
Nursing — a meaningfully more accessible route
Nursing programs are considerably more accessible to international students than Medicine, and UK-qualified nurses are in active national demand. This is a genuinely different application reality from Medicine and deserves to be evaluated on its own terms rather than being lumped in as "healthcare, same as MBBS."
Healthcare management & public health
Master's programs in Healthcare Management and Public Health sit closer to standard taught-Master's accessibility than either Medicine or Nursing, and are a common route for Indian students with a healthcare-adjacent background who want a UK postgraduate credential without the clinical-training pathway.
One detail specific to this field
Clinically-oriented programs can have their own fee-protection exceptions — for example, some universities explicitly exclude MBBS Medicine from standard tuition-freeze guarantees applied to other courses; see the cost of studying guide.
18Business & Finance in the UK▾
This is the field where the UK's structural advantage is most concrete — London is a genuine global finance capital, not a marketing claim.
London's financial-services concentration
London's status as one of the world's leading global finance hubs is the structural reason business, finance, and fintech draw such a large share of Indian applicants to the UK specifically — the employer density in and around the City and Canary Wharf has no real UK equivalent elsewhere.

Scholarships, housing, careers & research
19Scholarships in the UK for Indian Students▾
The UK runs more India-specific, fully-documented scholarship routes than most other single destinations — worth taking seriously rather than treating as a long shot.
Chevening Scholarships
Fully funded, UK-government (FCDO) postgraduate scholarships. Requires 2+ years (2,800 hours) of relevant work experience, an undergraduate degree completed 2+ years before the deadline, and applications to 3 eligible courses with at least one unconditional offer by deadline. Comes with a 2-year return-to-home-country commitment after the award. 2027/28 cycle closes 6 October 2026.
Commonwealth Scholarships
| Detail | Figure |
|---|---|
| Coverage | Full tuition, return airfare, study travel grant, monthly stipend |
| Stipend | £1,712/month outside London, £2,000/month in London |
| Eligibility | Min. upper-second-class (2:1) honours degree, demonstrated financial need |
| 2027/28 deadline | 20 October 2026, 16:00 BST |
GREAT Scholarships (India)
Run by British Council India: £10,000 per scholarship toward tuition for 1-year taught postgraduate courses, at 13 named UK partner universities for 2026/27 — including Bristol, Kent, Reading, Surrey, and Queen's Belfast.
Charles Wallace India Trust
For Indian citizens aged 28–38 in arts/heritage-conservation fields, with a first degree/diploma/professional qualification and no CWIT grant in the past 5 years. Covers UK accommodation and living costs plus a £700 international-travel contribution; average total grant value exceeds £50,000. Does not cover domestic India travel, visa fees, IELTS fees, or insurance.
How to actually approach applications
- Chevening and Commonwealth both require you to already have — or be actively pursuing — multiple university offers, so sequence your program applications first
- GREAT is tied to 13 specific partner universities — check the current list before assuming your target university qualifies
- Don't build your core budget around any single scholarship — apply to several in parallel
20Student Accommodation in the UK▾
More structured than Ireland's system, but the details are still set university by university, not nationally.
The halls-of-residence system
Most UK universities run a formal halls-of-residence system, and many explicitly guarantee first-year accommodation to new students, including international students, provided offer and deadline conditions are met.
Beyond first year
Most students move into private rentals from second year onward. A documented UK student-housing affordability conversation exists in the press alongside the halls system.
Costs
21Career Prospects in the UK▾
The official graduate-outcomes source exists (HESA) — it just doesn't hand out a simple headline salary figure the way many blogs imply.
What HESA's Graduate Outcomes survey confirms
87% of 2023/24 graduates were in work or further study roughly 15 months after finishing their course, per HESA's most recent release — down slightly from 88% the year before. This is the official national outcomes measure.
What we're not repeating
Why London specifically
London's concentration of finance, consulting, and technology employers is the structural reason it dominates the UK graduate-hiring conversation — see business & finance in the UK and best student cities.
22Research & Academic Reputation in the UK▾
The UK's research reputation is backed by two named, verifiable institutions most guides mention only in passing, if at all.
UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)
UKRI is the umbrella public body funding UK research and innovation, including the PhD stipends covered in the PhD guide — a direct, dated signal of sustained state investment (the minimum doctoral stipend rose to £20,780/year from October 2025, the largest real-terms increase since 2003).
The Research Excellence Framework (REF)
REF is the UK's official system for assessing research quality across every higher-education provider, determining the allocation of roughly £2 billion/year in public quality-related research funding. It's run by Research England on behalf of the four UK funding bodies, with the next assessment cycle already named — REF 2029.
The UK-India research relationship
UKIERI (UK-India Education and Research Initiative), now in its third phase, has delivered 822 partnerships, 2,423 research/knowledge products, and trained over 25,000 learners, researchers and academics. The India-UK Roadmap 2030 separately commits to a Mutual Recognition of Qualifications framework, a biennial UK-India Science and Innovation Council, the Newton Fund for early-career researcher mobility, and a Women in STEM Scholarships scheme for Indian women — a genuine, named institutional relationship, not an informal alumni network.
Country comparisons
23UK vs USA for Indian Students▾
Both are top global choices for Indian students, but they differ enormously on cost, degree length, and visa risk.
Side by side
| Factor | UK | USA |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's length | 3 years | 4 years |
| Master's length | 1 year (taught) | 2 years (typical) |
| Post-study work | 2 yrs / 18 mo from Jan 2027 (Bach./Mast.), 3 yrs PhD | OPT: 12 months (up to 36 for STEM), then H-1B lottery — genuinely uncertain |
| Visa certainty after study | Graduate Route is a guaranteed grant if eligible | H-1B is a lottery — OPT alone doesn't guarantee long-term US residence |
Choose the UK if...
- You want a shorter, less expensive overall degree timeline
- You want guaranteed post-study work permission rather than a lottery-dependent visa outcome
- Russell Group prestige and QS top-100 depth matter to you
Choose USA if...
- Your field specifically benefits from the US's deeper venture/tech ecosystem and you're comfortable with H-1B uncertainty
- A 4-year Bachelor's with broader major flexibility suits your goals better
24UK vs Canada for Indian Students▾
Canada is frequently cross-shopped against the UK for one reason: a clearer, longer-standing pathway to permanent residence.
Side by side
| Factor | UK | Canada |
|---|---|---|
| Master's length | 1 year (taught) | 1–2 years |
| Post-study work | 2 yrs / 18 mo from Jan 2027 (Bach./Mast.), 3 yrs PhD | Post-Graduation Work Permit: up to 3 years, program-length-dependent |
| Permanent residence pathway | No direct PR track from the Graduate Route itself | Express Entry / PNP pathways are more established and more central to Canada's pitch |
| Cost | Generally lower tuition than top US options; living cost varies sharply by city | Generally moderate tuition; living cost varies sharply by city |
Choose the UK if...
- Global brand strength and a 1-year Master's matter more to you than an explicit PR pathway
- You want the shortest total time-to-degree among major English-speaking destinations
Choose Canada if...
- A clear, well-established permanent-residence pathway is your top priority
- You're comparing total multi-year cost of settling, not just the degree itself
25UK vs Australia for Indian Students▾
Australia and the UK both draw large Indian student cohorts with comparable post-study work durations — the real difference is geography and season.
Side by side
| Factor | UK | Australia |
|---|---|---|
| Master's length | 1 year (taught) | 1–2 years |
| Post-study work | 2 yrs / 18 mo from Jan 2027 (Bach./Mast.), 3 yrs PhD | Temporary Graduate visa: broadly comparable duration, varies by qualification and region |
| Academic calendar | Sept/Oct primary intake | Feb/July intakes, Southern Hemisphere calendar |
| Distance from India | ~9 hour flight from most Indian cities | ~11–13 hour flight from most Indian cities |
Choose the UK if...
- Shorter flights and time-zone proximity to India matter to you
- You want the deeper Russell Group / QS top-100 rankings presence
Choose Australia if...
- The Southern Hemisphere academic calendar fits your application timing better
- A specific field (e.g. mining engineering, some agricultural sciences) is a genuine Australian specialty
26UK vs Ireland for Indian Students▾
Both are English-speaking, both sit in Europe, and both have a degree-level-dependent post-study work system — the details differ in ways worth knowing precisely.
Side by side
| Factor | UK | Ireland |
|---|---|---|
| Post-study work | 2 yrs / 18 mo from Jan 2027 (Bach./Mast.), 3 yrs PhD | 1 yr (Bachelor's) / up to 2 yrs (Master's/PhD) via Stamp 1G |
| Master's length | 1 year (taught) | 1–2 years |
| Rankings depth | 10+ universities in QS top 100 | Fewer top-100 entries, strong in specific tech/pharma niches |
| Visa financial proof | £1,529/mo (London) or £1,171/mo (elsewhere) | €10,000/yr benchmark |
Choose the UK if...
- Global rankings depth and course-catalog breadth matter more to you
- You want the longer Bachelor's-level Graduate Route window (2 years vs Ireland's 1 year for the same degree level, if you apply before 31 December 2026)
Choose Ireland if...
- A lower overall cost base and Ireland's concentrated tech/pharma employer density fit your goals better
- You specifically want the fuller 2-year post-study window at Master's/PhD level that Ireland also offers, alongside a smaller, easier-to-navigate university sector

Frequently Asked Questions
Key answers on the Graduate Route, visa fees, funds, TB test, health cover and STEM.
Is the UK Graduate Route still 2 years?▾
Yes, but only for applications submitted on or before 31 December 2026. From 1 January 2027, it's confirmed to fall to 18 months for Bachelor's and Master's graduates. PhD graduates keep the full 3 years either way, confirmed directly on gov.uk.
What is the UK student visa fee and IHS cost?▾
The Student visa application fee is £558. The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) is £776/year for students, paid upfront for the full length of your course.
How much money do I need to show for a UK student visa?▾
£1,529/month if studying in London, or £1,171/month if studying outside London, held continuously for 28 days, per the official UKVI figures effective from 11 November 2025.
Do I need a TB test to apply for a UK student visa from India?▾
Yes — India is explicitly on gov.uk's list of countries where a TB test certificate is required as part of the visa application, from an approved clinic.
Do I need private health insurance in the UK if I'm already paying the Immigration Health Surcharge?▾
Generally no, for standard NHS-equivalent care — the IHS gives you NHS access on largely the same basis as a UK resident. It doesn't cover prescriptions in England, dental treatment, eye tests, or fertility treatment, which need separate payment either way.
Do STEM graduates get a longer Graduate Route than other subjects?▾
No — the current Graduate Route gives the same duration to all Bachelor's/Master's graduates and all PhD graduates regardless of subject. An older, pre-2021 scheme had a STEM extension; that no longer applies.
