Study In New Zealand
New Zealand Student Visa Consultant · Surat, Ahmedabad & Vadodara
The honest, current picture — off-campus work rose from 20 to 25 hours per week (not per fortnight, unlike Australia) from 3 November 2025; the Post-Study Work Visa is expanding from 16 November 2026 to cover graduate-diploma holders who also hold a prior bachelor's degree; the Fee Paying Student Visa now costs from NZD $850 total; and the minimum funds requirement is NZD $20,000/year for tertiary study, not the $17,000/year school-age figure. Every figure on this page is checked against Immigration New Zealand and Education New Zealand, not guessed from a competitor's blog.
Study in New Zealand
New Zealand is a smaller destination than Australia, Canada, the UK or the USA — but it is growing fast for Indian students specifically. 10,640 Indian students enrolled between January and August 2024 alone, up 34% year-on-year, making India New Zealand's #2 source country of international students. Four corrections matter more than any other facts on this page: off-campus work rose from 20 to 25 hours per week (not per fortnight, unlike Australia) from 3 November 2025; the Post-Study Work Visa is expanding from 16 November 2026 to cover graduate-diploma holders who also already hold a prior bachelor's degree; the Fee Paying Student Visa now costs from NZD $850 total; and the minimum funds requirement is NZD $20,000/year for tertiary study, not the $17,000/year school-age figure.
New Zealand is also not a generic "all-rounder" destination — its genuine specialty strength is in hospitality/tourism management and agriculture/agribusiness, both backed by real industry scale rather than being bolt-on electives. See the fully expanded Post-Study Work Visa guide and the Green List pathway guide below.
The four figures above — India as NZ's #2 source country, the 25-hours-per-week work rule, the incoming November 2026 Post-Study Work Visa expansion, and all 8 universities being state-funded — are the ones worth memorising first, and each is explained, sourced and expanded on in its own section below.

New Zealand's core advantages are structural, not marketing claims: a university system that's entirely state-funded (all 8 universities, no private tier to screen), a genuine specialty in hospitality/tourism management and agriculture/agribusiness, a work-rights regime that just became more generous (25 hours/week from 3 November 2025), and a Post-Study Work Visa that is genuinely expanding rather than tightening, from 16 November 2026.
Beyond that, NZQA registration gives every legitimate provider a clear, checkable legitimacy signal, and New Zealand is consistently pitched as the "cheaper, safer alternative to Australia" — a claim this page tests honestly on the comparison table below, using only each country's own verified figures. The trade-off worth knowing up front: New Zealand runs a smaller total university and course count than Australia, Canada or the UK, and its visa system processes far fewer applicants overall.

Bachelor's, Master's & PhD in New Zealand
New Zealand runs a straightforward NZQA-levelled system — each level has its own full guide below.
Bachelor's Degree (Level 7)
3 years typically — the standard undergraduate route, and one of the qualification levels that qualifies for the Post-Study Work Visa if studied full-time for 30+ weeks in NZ.
Master's Degree (Level 9)
1-2 years, coursework or research — carries the longest current Post-Study Work Visa duration of any qualification level.
PhD
~3 years, typically research-only — several universities extend domestic-equivalent tuition to international PhD candidates, confirm per institution.
Cost of studying in New Zealand
Tuition is institution-set and not officially published as a numeric range — presented here honestly, alongside the official cost-of-living benchmarks that do exist.
| What to source | Where to get it |
|---|---|
| Programme-specific fee | Directly from each university's own international fee page |
| PhD tuition | Ask about domestic-equivalent rates for international candidates |
| NZEA scholarship value | Confirm current per-award NZD value with the scholarships office |
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Fee Paying Student Visa | from NZD $850 total |
| Minimum funds (tertiary study) | NZD $20,000/yr |
| Accommodation | NZD $140-$484/week |
New Zealand's official cost-of-living page does not publish numeric tuition ranges — it directs students to each institution's own fee page. This page does not invent a tuition figure to fill that gap; always confirm the exact current fee directly with each shortlisted university. See the full tuition fees guide.
The NZD $20,000/year minimum funds figure applies to tertiary study — not the $17,000/year figure, which applies only to compulsory school-age education. See cost of living in New Zealand and the minimum funds requirement guide.
Scholarships for Indian students
A scholarship built specifically for Indian students, plus a government-funded route with narrower eligibility — here's what's confirmed and what still needs verification. See the full scholarships guide.
New Zealand Excellence Awards (NZEA)
29 partial awards for Indian students across all 8 universities. See the NZEA guide.
Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships
Government-funded, primarily development-focused and postgraduate-oriented. See the scholarships guide.
University-specific scholarships
Merit- and need-based aid varies by institution — always confirm current amounts directly with the university's financial-aid office.
Fee Paying Student Visa: types, fees & process — the current NZD $850 figure
Most Indian applicants apply for the Fee Paying Student Visa — covered step by step in the complete Fee Paying Student Visa guide and the minimum funds requirement explainer.
Visa type & provider registration
- ●Fee Paying Student Visa: the standard route for full-time study at an NZQA-registered provider.
- ●Offer of Place required first: only an NZQA-registered provider can issue one — see the top universities guide.
Fees
- ●Visa fee: from NZD $850 total, per the current live INZ fee page — confirm the exact breakdown via INZ's fee-finder at application time.
- ●Minimum funds: NZD $20,000/year for tertiary study (not the $17,000/year school-age figure).
- ●Health insurance: mandatory for the full enrolment — New Zealand has no reciprocal health arrangement for India.
Document checklist
- ●Offer of Place from an NZQA-registered provider
- ●Evidence of funds meeting the NZD $20,000/year threshold
- ●Mandatory Pastoral-Care-Code-compliant health insurance
- ●English-test results, passport, transcripts, visa fee payment
Application, step by step
- Secure an Offer of Place from an NZQA-registered provider
- Arrange mandatory health and travel insurance
- Gather evidence of funds (NZD $20,000/yr for tertiary study)
- Lodge the application and pay the visa fee (from NZD $850 total)
- Provide biometrics/supporting documents as requested, then await a decision
Rule of thumb: confirm the exact current visa fee breakdown directly on INZ's live fee-finder before paying — the $850 headline figure is current, but the fee/levy split behind it was not independently confirmed this pass.
Note: The full checklist is covered in the document checklist guide and the visa rejection reasons guide.
Intakes & application deadlines
February/March and July intakes, set individually per institution — always reconfirm directly.
Main Intake
New Zealand's largest intake, aligned with the NZ academic year — the widest programme and scholarship choice across all 8 universities.
Secondary Intake
A real, smaller second intake with fewer programmes open — confirm per institution.
Plan Ahead
Start your application at least 6-9 months before your target intake — popular programmes with limited seats close well ahead of the intake date.
Admission requirements
| Requirement | Typical benchmark |
|---|---|
| General (all programmes) | Institution-set, not nationally set — qualifying academic record + English proficiency |
| English proficiency | IELTS, PTE Academic or TOEFL commonly accepted — minimums vary by university |
| Statement of purpose | Required for many postgraduate programmes |
| Postgraduate business (MBA etc.) | Work experience or relevant background, institution-set |
Post-Study Work Visa — expanding from 16 November 2026
This is the single most important correction on this entire page. Announced 10 September 2026 and effective Monday 16 November 2026, the Post-Study Work Visa is expanding to cover graduate-diploma (Level 7) holders who also already hold a prior bachelor's degree — from New Zealand or overseas, no time limit on when it was earned. This is a genuine positive change most competitor content almost certainly does not yet reflect.
Under the current baseline (pre-16-Nov-2026) rules, eligibility covers a Level 7 bachelor's degree studied full-time for 30+ weeks in NZ, Level 8-10 qualifications, or an approved non-degree Level 4-7 list — one visa per lifetime. Full detail is in the complete Post-Study Work Visa guide and the Green List pathway guide.
Durations, precisely
- Bachelor's/Level 7 & approved non-degree: up to 1 year
- Postgraduate Diploma (Level 8): 1 year
- Master's (Level 9) & doctorate: 3 years
- One Post-Study Work Visa per lifetime
- Expansion: graduate-diploma + prior bachelor's, from 16 Nov 2026

Top universities & institutions in New Zealand
All 8 New Zealand universities are state-funded — no private tier to screen for quality risk. Universities New Zealand, citing THE rankings specifically, states the sector ranks in the global top 3%.
All 8 New Zealand universities — every one state-funded
Genuine specialty institutions
- Universities New Zealand's "top 3%" claim is a THE-rankings-based sector claim, not a government statistic or a QS claim
- No private-university tier to screen for quality risk — every option is state-funded and NZQA-regulated
- Choose by programme specialty and city fit rather than a single national ranking
Best student cities in New Zealand
Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin — driven by university concentration, not a single government ranking.
| City | Best for |
|---|---|
| Auckland | New Zealand's largest city and economic hub; University of Auckland + AUT; largest Indian community |
| Wellington | Capital city; Victoria University of Wellington; compact, policy/creative links |
| Christchurch | Lower cost of living; University of Canterbury (Lincoln nearby) |
| Dunedin | Classic university town; University of Otago, NZ's oldest university |
New Zealand vs Australia for Indian students
Competitors lean heavily on "New Zealand is the cheaper, safer alternative to Australia." Here's that claim tested honestly, using only each country's own officially verified figures.
| Factor | New Zealand | Australia |
|---|---|---|
| Off-campus work rights | 25 hrs/week (from 3 Nov 2025) | 48 hrs/fortnight (a different unit — roughly 24 hrs/wk avg) |
| Student visa fee | from NZD $850 total | AUD 2,500 (Subclass 500, eff. 1 Jul 2026) |
| Post-study work, top duration | up to 3 years (Master's/doctorate) | up to 3 years (Master's-Research/PhD) |
| Universities | 8, all state-funded | 43+, including the Go8 research-intensive cluster |
Living, working & building a career in New Zealand
Work rights, housing, insurance, career prospects, research and alumni — the practical side of studying in New Zealand.
Work rights during study
25 hours per week off-campus, up from 20, effective 3 November 2025 — measured per week, a different unit from Australia's fortnightly rule.
Accommodation
NZD $140-$484/week official benchmark — costs vary sharply by city; always verify current rates directly with your institution's housing office.
Health insurance
Mandatory under NZQA's Pastoral Care Code. New Zealand has no reciprocal health arrangement for India — fully self-arranged cover.
Career prospects
The Green List / Straight to Residence pathway is employment-based, via a qualifying job offer and an AEWV — never automatic on graduation.
Research & academic reputation
All 8 universities are state-funded; Universities NZ, citing THE rankings, states the sector ranks in the global top 3%.
Alumni network
Institution-specific — no single national body; strength varies by faculty and by that programme's established India pipeline.

01New Zealand Fee Paying Student Visa▾
The Fee Paying Student Visa is the standard visa route for international students, including almost all Indian applicants, enrolling in a full-time programme at an NZQA-registered New Zealand education provider. It permits study for the duration of the approved course and, for eligible holders, off-campus work rights during term (see work rights during study).
Correction — The current live INZ fee page states the visa costs 'from NZD $850 total' — up from an October 2024 official PDF that separately listed a NZD $485 visa fee plus a NZD $265 Immigration Levy, totalling NZD $750. The exact current fee/levy split behind the $850 figure could not be confirmed from a primary source this pass. Always cite 'from NZD $850 total' as the current headline, and confirm the exact breakdown via INZ's live fee-finder tool at the time of application rather than relying on the older $750 figure.
02Minimum Funds Requirement for New Zealand▾
Correction — If you are applying for a Bachelor's, Master's, PhD, diploma, or English-language programme, you need the NZD $20,000/year figure — not $17,000/year, which applies only to compulsory school-age education. This mix-up is one of the most common factual errors in New Zealand study-abroad content.
Immigration New Zealand typically accepts recent bank statements, a loan approval letter from a recognised financial institution, a scholarship confirmation letter, or a sponsor's financial documents with a declaration — always confirm the exact accepted document list and formatting on INZ's live fee-paying student visa page before submission, since evidentiary requirements can be updated. See the Fee Paying Student Visa guide for the full process and the document checklist for everything else you'll need alongside your funds evidence.
03Common New Zealand Student Visa Rejection Reasons▾
Build your application around the same verified checklist every time: confirm your provider's NZQA registration, gather funds evidence well above the NZD $20,000/year minimum with a clear paper trail, arrange Pastoral-Care-Code-compliant insurance before you apply, and write a genuine, specific statement connecting your study plan to your background. See the full Fee Paying Student Visa guide and document checklist.
04Document Checklist for New Zealand▾
Built from every verified visa and admission requirement in this guide — use this as your final pre-submission checklist.
05Work Rights During Study in New Zealand▾
Correction — Most competitor content and older material still says '20 hours a week'. The current, correct figure for eligible student visa holders is 25 hours per week off-campus, effective 3 November 2025. Critically, New Zealand measures this per week — do not confuse it with Australia's different, fortnightly 48-hours-per-fortnight rule (roughly 24 hours/week on average but structured completely differently). These are two different countries' rules with two different units and cadences, not the same rule stated two ways.
The 25-hours-per-week off-campus allowance applies to eligible student visa holders during term time; many programmes also permit full-time work during scheduled academic breaks, subject to your specific visa conditions — always check the conditions printed on your own visa rather than assuming a blanket rule. This work-rights allowance is separate from, and comes before, the Post-Study Work Visa, which governs work rights after you graduate.
06New Zealand Post-Study Work Visa▾
Correction — From Monday 16 November 2026, Post-Study Work Visa eligibility extends to graduate-diploma (Level 7) holders who ALSO already hold a prior bachelor's degree — from New Zealand or overseas, with no time limit on when that bachelor's was earned. This was announced 10 September 2026 and is a genuine positive policy change. Because it is so recent, it is very likely absent from most competitor content published before this guide, making it the strongest current differentiator available for New Zealand right now.
Under the rules in force up to the expansion, eligibility covers: a Level 7 bachelor's degree studied full-time for 30+ weeks in New Zealand; Level 8–10 qualifications; or an approved non-degree Level 4–7 qualification list, where the job you take must relate to your field of study. Only one Post-Study Work Visa is granted per lifetime, so this decision matters — plan your qualification level with the visa outcome in mind, not just the course content.
07Green List & Skilled Migration Pathway▾
Correction — The Green List / Straight to Residence pathway is EMPLOYMENT-based, via a job offer and an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) — it is not an automatic PR route that a student visa or Post-Study Work Visa holder receives on graduation. Present it correctly as 'the pathway after you secure a qualifying job', not as a guaranteed outcome of study.
Graduates who complete their Post-Study Work Visa work window and then secure a job offer in a Green List occupation can move onto this employment-based pathway. Fields with genuine New Zealand demand — including nursing, engineering and several trades — are more likely to intersect with Green List roles; see nursing in New Zealand as one example. This pathway has been active in its current form since May 2022.
08Top Universities in New Zealand▾
Correction — This claim traces specifically to Universities New Zealand (Te Pokai Tara, the sector's own representative body — not INZ or ENZ, the government immigration/education-promotion authorities) citing Times Higher Education (THE) rankings specifically. It should not be restated as a blanket government statistic, and a separate Universities New Zealand article on QS rankings did not repeat this specific '3%' figure — don't attribute it to QS.
Because every New Zealand university is state-funded, the practical differentiators for Indian applicants are city fit (see best student cities), programme specialty — Lincoln and Massey both have particularly strong agriculture and agribusiness programmes, for example — and relative cost, covered on the cheapest universities page.
09Bachelor's Degrees in New Zealand▾
A New Zealand Bachelor's degree is classified NZQA Level 7 and typically runs 3 years full-time. It is also one of the qualification levels that, if studied full-time for 30+ weeks in New Zealand, currently qualifies for the Post-Study Work Visa (up to 1 year, under current baseline rules).
Business/Management, Engineering and IT remain the largest fields by enrolment, alongside New Zealand's genuine specialty strengths in hospitality/tourism management and agriculture/agribusiness. See admission requirements for typical entry criteria.
10Master's Degrees in New Zealand▾
A Master's degree is classified NZQA Level 9 and typically takes 1-2 years, depending on whether it's coursework-based or research-based and whether a Postgraduate Diploma (Level 8, typically 1 year) is required as a bridge into it. Master's graduates currently qualify for up to 3 years on the Post-Study Work Visa — the longest duration of any qualification level.
See MS in New Zealand and MBA in New Zealand for field-specific detail, plus nursing for postgraduate nursing routes relevant to New Zealand's healthcare workforce needs.
11PhD in New Zealand▾
A New Zealand doctorate typically takes 3 years and is usually research-only rather than coursework-based. PhD holders qualify for up to 3 years on the Post-Study Work Visa under current rules — the same maximum duration as Master's graduates.
Correction — Several New Zealand universities are known to extend domestic-equivalent tuition rates to international PhD candidates, which can materially change the cost calculation versus a Master's — but exact tuition figures were not confirmed from a primary official source this pass. Confirm the current domestic-rate policy and fee directly with each university's graduate research office before budgeting; see tuition fees.
12Cheapest Universities in New Zealand▾
Correction — New Zealand's official cost-of-living page (studywithnewzealand.govt.nz) does not publish numeric tuition ranges by university — it directs students to each institution's own fee page. Any 'cheapest university' list you see with specific NZD figures should be treated as unverified unless it cites each university's own current fee page directly.
Request the current programme-specific fee schedule directly from each university's international office, compare it against that city's living-cost profile (Auckland and Wellington generally run higher than Hamilton, Dunedin or Christchurch — see best student cities), and factor in scholarship eligibility (see scholarships) before drawing a conclusion. See tuition fees for the full sourcing approach.
13MBA in New Zealand▾
MBA programmes are offered across several of New Zealand's 8 state-funded universities (see top universities), typically classified NZQA Level 9 like other Master's degrees, and typically running 1-2 years. MBA graduates currently qualify for up to 3 years on the Post-Study Work Visa.
Confirm the exact programme fee directly with your shortlisted university (see tuition fees), and plan living costs against the official cost-of-living benchmarks and the visa's NZD $20,000/year minimum funds requirement.
14MS in New Zealand▾
MS-equivalent programmes in engineering, IT and applied sciences are offered as NZQA Level 9 Master's degrees, typically 1-2 years, across universities including the University of Auckland, University of Canterbury and University of Waikato. Like all Master's graduates, MS graduates currently qualify for up to 3 years on the Post-Study Work Visa — the longest duration available.
New Zealand pairs a smaller, more personal cohort size than bigger destinations with the same NZQA-regulated quality assurance across every institution, plus the recently improved 25-hours-per-week work allowance to help fund living costs during study.
15Hospitality & Tourism Management in New Zealand▾
Tourism is consistently one of New Zealand's top economic sectors, and the country's hospitality/tourism management programmes are built around that scale — strong industry placement links, faculty with direct industry experience, and a domestic job market that actually needs graduates in this field. This is one of the two fields (alongside agriculture and agribusiness) where New Zealand's specialty case is strongest and most defensible against bigger competing destinations.
Hospitality/tourism graduates can build New Zealand work experience under the current 25-hours-per-week study work rights, then transition into full-time roles post-graduation via the Post-Study Work Visa, with a possible longer-term route through the Green List pathway if a qualifying role and employer sponsorship are secured.
16Agriculture & Agribusiness in New Zealand▾
New Zealand's economy is heavily built around agricultural export — dairy, meat, wine and horticulture in particular — and its universities reflect that directly: Lincoln University is New Zealand's specialist land-based university, and Massey University runs one of the country's largest agriculture and agribusiness faculties. Both are among the 8 state-funded universities, so there is no quality-assurance gap versus New Zealand's more generalist institutions.
Agribusiness graduates enter a sector with consistent New Zealand labour demand, which can intersect with the Green List / Straight to Residence pathway for qualifying roles after securing employer sponsorship — always confirm the current occupation list rather than assuming any agriculture-adjacent role qualifies automatically.
17Nursing in New Zealand▾
A Bachelor of Nursing is an NZQA Level 7 qualification, typically 3 years, offered by several of New Zealand's 8 universities and registered nursing schools. Graduates who studied full-time for 30+ weeks in New Zealand currently qualify for the Post-Study Work Visa (up to 1 year, at Bachelor's/Level 7).
Postgraduate nursing qualifications (Level 8/9) suit registered nurses seeking specialisation or Indian nursing graduates converting their qualification for New Zealand registration — these carry a longer, 1-3 year Post-Study Work Visa depending on level. Nursing is also a field where genuine New Zealand shortage-occupation demand can intersect with the Green List / Straight to Residence pathway once a qualifying role and AEWV are secured.
18One-Year Diploma Courses in New Zealand▾
New Zealand offers a range of one-year diploma programmes (NZQA Level 5-7) across polytechnics and institutes of technology as well as some university-affiliated providers, often in applied, vocational fields. These can be a faster, lower-cost route into New Zealand study than a full 3-year Bachelor's.
Correction — Not every diploma automatically qualifies for the Post-Study Work Visa. Under current rules, only an approved non-degree Level 4-7 qualification list is eligible, and the job you take afterward must relate to your field of study. Always confirm your specific programme's status on the current approved list with your institution or a counsellor before enrolling if the Post-Study Work Visa is part of your plan — see the full Post-Study Work Visa guide.
19Study in Auckland▾
Auckland is New Zealand's largest city and its economic centre, home to the University of Auckland and Auckland University of Technology (AUT) — two of the country's 8 state-funded universities. It also has New Zealand's largest Indian community, which matters for everything from familiar groceries to community support networks.
As New Zealand's biggest city, Auckland generally sits toward the higher end of the official cost-of-living benchmarks — accommodation in particular. Budget with the NZD $484/week catered-hall figure and NZD $140/week shared-room figure as your realistic bracket, and plan against the visa's NZD $20,000/year minimum funds requirement.
20Study in Wellington▾
Wellington is New Zealand's capital city and home to Victoria University of Wellington, one of the country's 8 state-funded universities. Its compact, walkable layout and strong government, policy and creative-industry presence make it a popular choice for postgraduate students in particular.
Wellington's cost profile sits broadly in line with Auckland for accommodation, within the official NZD $140-$484/week accommodation bracket — confirm the specific figure for your chosen hall or flat directly with the university's housing office.
21Study in Christchurch▾
Christchurch is home to the University of Canterbury, with Lincoln University — New Zealand's specialist land-based university, strong in agriculture and agribusiness — a short distance away. The city rebuilt extensively after the 2011 earthquake and now has a modern, well-planned campus and city-centre infrastructure.
Christchurch generally sits at the lower end of New Zealand's official cost-of-living benchmarks relative to Auckland and Wellington, making it a genuine option for cost-conscious applicants without sacrificing access to a full 8-university-system institution.
22Study in Dunedin▾
Dunedin is home to the University of Otago, New Zealand's oldest university, and has one of the highest student-to-population ratios in the country — a genuinely classic 'university town' feel that's less common at New Zealand's bigger city campuses. It's a strong fit for students who want a close-knit campus community.
Dunedin's smaller-city scale generally keeps it toward the more affordable end of New Zealand's official cost-of-living benchmarks, particularly for accommodation, compared with Auckland or Wellington.
23Tuition Fees in New Zealand▾
Correction — studywithnewzealand.govt.nz, the official cost-of-living source, does not publish numeric tuition ranges by university or programme — it directs students to each institution's own fee page instead. Any tuition figure you see quoted here or elsewhere without a direct citation to a specific university's current fee page should be treated as unverified.
Once you have a real tuition figure, layer it against the official cost-of-living benchmarks and the visa's NZD $20,000/year minimum funds requirement to build your full annual budget.
24Cost of Living in New Zealand▾
A student in a shared room with modest spending can realistically land near the lower end of these ranges; a student in a catered hall with a fuller social budget will land near the top. Either way, the visa's NZD $20,000/year minimum funds requirement is a separate, independent test you must meet regardless of your actual planned spending — and the current 25-hours-per-week work allowance can meaningfully offset day-to-day costs once you're settled in.
25Scholarships in New Zealand▾
29 partial scholarship awards, available across all 8 New Zealand universities, specifically for Indian undergraduate and postgraduate applicants. The exact NZD value per award is not published on the official page — see the dedicated NZEA page for how to confirm the current value before applying.
Correction — Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships are government-funded but primarily development-focused and postgraduate-oriented — they are likely NOT open to self-funded Indian undergraduate applicants. Check eligibility per programme cycle directly on nzscholarships.govt.nz before assuming this is a general-purpose option.
26New Zealand Excellence Awards (NZEA)▾
29 partial scholarship awards are available for Indian undergraduate and postgraduate students, spread across all 8 New Zealand universities, per the official studywithnewzealand.govt.nz NZEA page.
Correction — The exact NZD value per NZEA award is not stated on the official page and was not confirmed from a primary source this pass. Do not quote a specific dollar figure for this scholarship until you've confirmed it directly with studywithnewzealand.govt.nz or the specific university's scholarships office for your current application cycle.
27Admission Requirements for New Zealand▾
Because every New Zealand university sets its own minimum English-test score and academic threshold, there is no single number that applies everywhere — confirm the exact requirement for your specific programme directly with the university's international admissions office before applying. See the document checklist for everything to prepare alongside these academic requirements.
28Intakes & Application Deadlines in New Zealand▾
There is no single, government-set application deadline — each university sets its own, and popular programmes with limited seats often close well ahead of the intake date. Start your application at least 6-9 months before your target intake to leave time for admission decisions, scholarship applications (see scholarships) and the visa process (see Fee Paying Student Visa).
29Study in New Zealand Without IELTS▾
Most New Zealand universities accept PTE Academic and TOEFL alongside IELTS — this is set per institution and per programme, so always confirm the accepted test list and minimum score directly with your shortlisted university rather than assuming a blanket rule across all 8 universities. See admission requirements for the fuller requirement set.
Some institutions also offer a waiver route for applicants who have completed prior education in an English-medium instruction system — this varies by university and should be confirmed directly rather than assumed.
30Best Student Cities in New Zealand▾
Match the city to your programme first — Lincoln (near Christchurch) and Massey for agriculture and agribusiness, for instance — then weigh cost of living (see cost of living) and community fit. See individual guides: Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin.
31Accommodation in New Zealand▾
Most universities offer on-campus or university-affiliated halls for first-year international students, with private shared flats becoming more common from second year onward. Confirm exact hall pricing directly with your university's housing office — it varies by campus and city, see best student cities — and factor it into the visa's NZD $20,000/year minimum funds requirement.
32Health Insurance in New Zealand▾
Correction — Health insurance is mandatory as a visa condition under NZQA's Education (Pastoral Care) Code for every enrolment of 2 or more weeks. New Zealand has NO reciprocal health agreement covering Indian students — there is no free public healthcare fallback. Present cover as fully self-arranged.
This is usually arranged directly through your education provider — confirm the specific policy and provider your university uses before arranging your own alternative, since providers often mandate their own bundled policy.
33Career Prospects in New Zealand▾
Graduation leads first to the Post-Study Work Visa (up to 1-3 years depending on qualification level, expanding further from 16 November 2026). During that window, graduates who secure a qualifying job offer in a Green List occupation can move onto an Accredited Employer Work Visa and, from there, the employment-based Green List / Straight to Residence pathway — never an automatic outcome of study alone.
New Zealand's clearest graduate demand sits in nursing and healthcare (see nursing), engineering, IT, and — reflecting the country's own economic strengths — hospitality/tourism management and agriculture/agribusiness (see the dedicated hospitality and agribusiness guides).
34Research & Academic Reputation in New Zealand▾
Correction — Universities New Zealand (Te Pokai Tara, the sector's own representative body) states that New Zealand's universities rank in the global top 3%, citing Times Higher Education (THE) rankings specifically. This is a sector-body claim tied to one ranking methodology — not a blanket government statistic and not a QS-rankings claim.
Every one of New Zealand's 8 universities is state-funded and regulated under the single NZQA qualifications framework — there is no unregulated private tier diluting the sector's overall standing, which is part of why a sector-wide claim like this is more defensible here than in markets with a large, uneven private-university sector.
35Alumni Network in New Zealand▾
Each of New Zealand's 8 universities runs its own alumni and careers-office network rather than there being a single, nationally-coordinated body. Strength varies materially by faculty and by how established that specific programme's India-student pipeline already is — a business school with a decade of Indian cohorts will have a very different alumni density than a newer specialised programme.
Ask your shortlisted university's international office directly for current Indian-alumni numbers in your specific programme, and look for LinkedIn-verifiable alumni in roles relevant to your career goal — a more reliable signal than a general marketing claim.
36Why Study in New Zealand▾
New Zealand runs a smaller total university and course count than Australia, Canada or the UK, and its visa system processes far fewer applicants overall — this guide doesn't overstate New Zealand's scale to make its case. See the direct New Zealand vs Australia comparison for where each destination genuinely wins.
37New Zealand vs Australia for Indian Students▾
New Zealand's off-campus work allowance (25 hours/week) is genuinely simpler to reason about than Australia's fortnightly 48-hour cap, and its visa fee (from NZD $850) is currently lower than Australia's AUD 2,500 Subclass 500 fee. Australia offers a far larger set of universities and course choices, including its Go8 research-intensive cluster, and India is Australia's #1 source country specifically for its post-study work visa. Neither country is a strictly 'better' choice — the right one depends on your field (New Zealand's genuine edge in hospitality and agribusiness vs Australia's broader research depth), your budget, and your target city.

Frequently Asked Questions
Key answers on the 25-hours-per-week work rule, the Nov 2026 Post-Study Work Visa expansion, the NZD $850 visa fee and the Green List pathway.
How many hours a week can I work while studying in New Zealand?▾
25 hours per week off-campus for eligible student visa holders, up from 20, effective 3 November 2025. This is measured per week — a different unit from Australia's fortnightly 48-hour cap.
Is the Post-Study Work Visa changing?▾
Yes — from Monday 16 November 2026, eligibility extends to graduate-diploma (Level 7) holders who also already hold a prior bachelor's degree, announced 10 September 2026.
How much does the New Zealand student visa cost?▾
From NZD $850 total, per the current live Immigration New Zealand fee page — always confirm the exact current breakdown via INZ's fee-finder at the time of application.
How much money do I need to show for a New Zealand student visa?▾
NZD $20,000/year for tertiary study — not the NZD $17,000/year figure, which applies only to compulsory school-age education.
Does graduating in New Zealand automatically give me permanent residence?▾
No. The Green List / Straight to Residence pathway is employment-based — it requires a qualifying job offer and an Accredited Employer Work Visa, never something granted automatically on graduation.
