The honest, current picture — the student visa (Subclass 500) fee is now AUD 2,500, effective 1 July 2026; the old GTE requirement was replaced by the Genuine Student (GS) requirement in March 2024; the Subclass 485 post-study work visa was completely overhauled effective 1 July 2025; and off-campus work is capped at 48 hours per fortnight, not per week. Study in Australia

Australia is one of the top three destinations Indian students consider — and also one of the fastest-moving on policy. 845,933 international students studied in Australia in 2025 (down 1% year-on-year); India is the #2 source country overall, after China, and the clear #1 source country specifically for the Subclass 485 post-study work visa, with 126,348 granted in 2024-25, up 14.4% on the year before. Six corrections matter more than any other facts on this page: the student visa fee is now AUD 2,500, effective 1 July 2026; the old GTE requirement was replaced by Genuine Student (GS) in March 2024; the Subclass 485 was completely overhauled effective 1 July 2025; work hours are 48 per fortnight, not per week; financial capacity is now AUD 29,710/year; and there is no formal legislated cap on enrolments — growth is managed via Ministerial Direction 115.

Australia is also not only a Go8-or-nothing decision. Dozens of TEQSA-registered universities outside the Group of Eight offer strong, more affordable programmes with genuine industry links. See the fully reformed Subclass 485 guide and the Genuine Student requirement guide below.

The four figures above — India's #1 ranking on the 485 visa, the AUD 2,500 visa fee, the 48-hours-per-fortnight work rule, and the Go8's ~70% research-funding share — are the ones worth memorising first, and each is explained, sourced and expanded on in its own section below.

Why should students choose Australia?

Australia's core advantages are structural, not marketing claims: a cluster of eight research-intensive Go8 universities all ranked QS top-100, a genuinely strong post-study work pathway that specifically favours Indian graduates in practice (India's #1 ranking on the 485 visa), a globally recognised qualifications framework (the AQF), and PTE Academic being unusually well-accepted compared to some other destinations.

Beyond that, TEQSA registration gives every legitimate provider a clear, checkable legitimacy signal, and multicultural cities like Melbourne and Sydney have large, established Indian communities. The trade-off worth knowing up front: 2025's Subclass 485 reforms and the rising visa fee require more careful planning than a few years ago — and most of that complexity is avoidable once the rules are correctly understood.

Cost of studying in Australia

Tuition is institution-set and varies enormously — presented here honestly, alongside the one official cost-of-living figure that does exist.

Tuition — the honest picture
Institution typeWhat to expect
Go8 universitiesGenerally higher, research-intensive premium
Other TEQSA-registered universitiesOften meaningfully lower for comparable programmes
Postgraduate professional (MBA etc.)Commands a premium at most institutions
Visa & living-cost fees — the numbers every applicant needs
FeeAmount
Subclass 500 visa feeAUD 2,500 (eff. 1 Jul 2026)
Financial capacity requirementAUD 29,710/yr
Subclass 485 application feeAUD 4,600 (eff. 1 Mar 2026)

Tuition varies significantly by university, degree level and programme (Go8 vs other universities, undergraduate vs postgraduate vs professional programmes) and was not itemised per-institution this pass. Always confirm the exact current fee directly with each shortlisted university. See the full tuition fees guide.

The AUD 29,710/year financial capacity figure is Home Affairs' own minimum living-cost baseline, not a full city-by-city cost-of-living guide — actual spending varies by city. See cost of living in Australia and the financial capacity requirement guide.

Scholarships for Indian students

Student visa (Subclass 500): types, fees & process — GS, not GTE

Every applicant is now assessed against the Genuine Student requirement, not the old GTE test — covered step by step in the complete Subclass 500 guide and the Genuine Student requirement explainer.

1

Visa type & Genuine Student

  • ●GS, not GTE: applications from 23 March 2024 are assessed against the Genuine Student requirement — a future PR intention no longer counts against you.
  • ●CoE required first: only a TEQSA-registered provider can issue one — see TEQSA and institution quality.
2

Fees

  • ●Subclass 500 fee: AUD 2,500, effective 1 July 2026 (up from AUD 2,000 in 2025 and AUD 1,600 in 2024).
  • ●Financial capacity: AUD 29,710/year for the primary applicant.
  • ●OSHC: mandatory for the full visa duration — India has no reciprocal health arrangement.
3

Document checklist

  • ●Letter of Offer / CoE from a TEQSA-registered provider
  • ●Genuine Student (GS) statement — not a "GTE statement"
  • ●Evidence of financial capacity (AUD 29,710/yr baseline)
  • ●OSHC purchase confirmation, English-test results, passport, transcripts
4

Application, step by step

  • Receive a Letter of Offer + CoE from a TEQSA-registered provider
  • Write a genuine, individualised GS statement
  • Demonstrate financial capacity (AUD 29,710/yr) and purchase OSHC
  • Lodge the application and pay the AUD 2,500 fee
  • Await processing — subject to Ministerial Direction 115 priority

Rule of thumb: write your GS statement specifically to your own background — generic, templated statements are exactly what GS assessment (like GTE before it) is designed to catch.

Note: The full checklist is covered in the document checklist guide and the visa rejection reasons guide.

After Graduation

Post-study work — Subclass 485, fully reformed 1 July 2025

This is the single most important correction on this entire page. The Subclass 485 was completely overhauled effective 1 July 2025: durations now run up to 2 years for Bachelor's/Master's-Coursework, up to 3 years for Master's-Research/PhD, and up to 18 months for the Post-Vocational stream. The age limit was cut to under 35 for most streams (from under-50), the English requirement was raised to IELTS 6.5 (no band below 5.5), and the application fee was separately doubled to AUD 4,600, effective 1 March 2026.

Despite the higher bar, India remains the #1 source country for 485 grants specifically — 126,348 in 2024-25, up 14.4% year-on-year. Full detail is in the complete Subclass 485 guide and the PR pathway guide.

Eligibility, precisely

  • Bachelor's/Honours & Master's-Coursework: up to 2 years
  • Master's-Research/PhD: up to 3 years
  • Age limit: under 35 for most streams (was under-50)
  • English: IELTS 6.5 overall, no band below 5.5
  • Application fee: AUD 4,600 (eff. 1 Mar 2026, up from AUD 2,300)

Top universities & institutions in Australia

TEQSA registration — not a ranking — is the real official signal that a provider is legitimate and visa-eligible. The Go8 is Australia's genuine research-intensive cluster; QS/THE rankings are third-party, not government data.

The Group of Eight (Go8) — 8 universities, all QS top-100

Go8Adelaide University, ANU, University of Melbourne, Monash, UNSW Sydney, University of Queensland, University of Sydney, UWA

Beyond the Go8 — strong, TEQSA-registered alternatives

🎓 Dozens of TEQSA-registered universities across every city, often more affordable for comparable programmes
🎓 Go8 carries ~70% of national research funding and ~AUD 10bn/yr combined research spend
🎓 Regional campuses — lower cost, plus access to the Subclass 485's regional-study bonus stream
  • TEQSA registration is the real official visa-eligibility signal — check it directly, don't assume from prestige
  • Go8, QS and THE rankings are all third-party or coalition-specific sources — always cite them accurately
  • Affordable, non-Go8 options exist for cost-conscious applicants without sacrificing legitimacy
Not yet verified — Per-university tuition and cost-of-attendance figures were not individually pulled this pass — verify per-institution.

Living, working & building a career in Australia

Work rights, housing, insurance, career prospects, research and alumni — the practical side of studying in Australia.

Work rights during study

48 hours per fortnight during study sessions — not per week, a commonly confused unit. Unlimited during breaks; no cap at all for Masters-by-Research/PhD students.

Accommodation

On-campus vs off-campus — costs vary sharply by city; always verify current rates directly with your institution's housing office.

Health insurance (OSHC)

Mandatory for the full visa duration. India has no reciprocal health arrangement — premiums vary by provider and duration, confirm current quotes.

Career prospects

The skilled-occupation pathway is shifting from the old SOL to the Core Skills Occupations List (CSOL) — still finalising, treat as in transition.

Research & academic reputation

The Go8 carries ~70% of national research funding and ~AUD 10bn/yr combined spend — evaluate per institution and department.

Alumni network

Institution-specific, particularly valuable at Go8 universities and in Melbourne/Sydney's finance and tech hubs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Key answers on the AUD 2,500 visa fee, the GTE-to-GS correction, the reformed Subclass 485 and the 48-hours-per-fortnight work rule.

Is the Australian student visa fee AUD 1,600, AUD 2,000, or AUD 2,500?▾

AUD 2,500, effective 1 July 2026 — the current figure. It has risen every year (AUD 710 pre-2024 → AUD 1,600 in 2024 → AUD 2,000 in 2025 → AUD 2,500 in 2026); any page still quoting AUD 1,600 or 2,000 is outdated — see the Subclass 500 guide above for the full explanation.

Do I still need to write a GTE statement?▾

No — the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement was replaced by the Genuine Student (GS) requirement for applications lodged on/after 23 March 2024. A future intention to seek PR no longer counts against you under GS.

How long can I work after graduating in Australia?▾

It depends on your qualification level under the reformed Subclass 485: up to 2 years for Bachelor's/Master's-Coursework, up to 3 years for Master's-Research/PhD, up to 18 months for the Post-Vocational stream.

Can I work 48 hours a week during my studies?▾

No — the cap is 48 hours per fortnight during study sessions, roughly 24 hours/week on average, unlimited during course breaks. Masters-by-Research and PhD students have no cap at all.

Is there a hard cap on how many international students Australia will accept?▾

No formal legislated cap exists. Growth is managed via Ministerial Direction 115, a visa-processing-priority mechanism pegged to 115% of each provider's allocated capacity.
